Ah, what a week. I will jump straight into it. Sean Spicer found himself in familiar territory this week….
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer got into an impressive muddle during a press briefing on Tuesday (11 April) when he said that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler did not use chemical weapons.
Asked about the relationship between Russia and Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, who is accused of using sarin gas in an attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun last week, Spicer said: “We didn’t use chemical weapons in World War Two – you had someone as despicable as Hitler who didn’t even sink to the – to using chemical weapons.”
Spicer, press briefing, April 11: We didn’t use chemical weapons in World War II. You know, you had … someone as despicable as Hitler, who didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons. So you have to, if you’re Russia, ask yourself, is this a country [Syria] that you and a regime [the Assad regime] that you want to align yourself with?
…and then came the clarifications.
Spicer, April 11: I think when you come to sarin gas, there was no … he was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing. I mean, there was clearly … there was not — in the — he brought them into the Holocaust center, I understand that.
But I was saying in the way that Assad used them, where he went into towns, dropped them down to innocent — into the middle of towns. It was brought — so, the use of it — and I appreciate the clarification. That was not the intent.
Spicer statement, April 11: In no way was I trying to lessen the horrendous nature of the Holocaust. I was trying to draw a distinction of the tactic of using airplanes to drop chemical weapons on population centers. Any attack on innocent people is reprehensible and inexcusable.
Spicer on CNN, April 11: I was obviously trying to make a point about the heinous acts that Assad had made against his own people last week using chemical weapons and gas. And frankly I mistakenly used an inappropriate and insensitive reference to the Holocaust for which, frankly, there is no — there is no comparison. And for that, I apologize. It was a mistake to do that. …
Well, clearly, anybody who not just suffered in the Holocaust or is a descendant of anybody, but frankly, you know, anyone who was offended by those comments. It’s not — as I said, I’m not in any way standing by them. I was trying to draw a comparison for which there shouldn’t have been one. It was insensitive and inappropriate.
Spicer, April 12: I got into a topic that I shouldn’t have. And — and I screwed up. I mean, you — you know, and I hope people understand that — that we all make mistakes.
We all make mistakes. Really? Comparing Hitler not using chemical weaponss on the battlefield to Assad dropping gas on Syrian citizens – despite the fact that Hitler gassed many, many people in chambers/concentration camps – is a mistake?
At the end of the day, the only difference is the method. Assad isn’t worse than Hitler he’s just his own special kind of bad.
There’s really nothing else to say. Sean Spicer is straight up loco. There’s not a single ounce of intelligence or common sense in his head. If you have to resort to using Hitler to shame Russia then you’re a special kind of fucked up. Russia doesn’t give a shit (they’re literally setting up their own concentration chambers right now!), but those Holocaust survivors and those who are’descendants’ of survivors do. How he hasn’t been fired is a mystery to me. On the other hand, rampant incompetence seems to be the theme of this administration so…His job is probably very secure.
Bye Bye Bannon, cont.
“I like Steve, but you have to remember he was not involved in my campaign until very late,” Trump said. “I had already beaten all the senators and all the governors, and I didn’t know Steve. I’m my own strategist and it wasn’t like I was going to change strategies because I was facing crooked Hillary.”
Can someone PLEASE tell Trump and his little trumpets online that they’ve overdone Crooked Hillary. I’m talking dried out turkey overdone. You all sound so ridiculous.
In another interview Wednesday, in the Wall Street Journal, the president referred to Bannon as “a guy who works for me.”
Oh, snap. I have no idea why Bannon is anywhere near government so he deserves this. The fact that he’s waging war with a 36 year old billionaire with even fewer reasons to be involved with government is kind of alarming, though.
Tough Talk From Tillerson
Tillerson was in Russia this week for talks with senior diplomats. He’s been talking tough on Russia for the past week but…Just a few weeks ago Trump and co were all gung-ho about Russia.
“I hope that what the Russian government concludes is that they have aligned themselves with an unreliable partner in Bashar al-Assad,” Tillerson said before flying to the Russian capital, referring to Syria’s embattled leader.
Something tells me that Putin isn’t bothered.
Hours after Tillerson’s warning, his [Putin] office announced Russia would host Syria and Iran’s foreign ministers for a three-way meeting Friday, the day after Tillerson departs.
Meanwhile, this was another opportunity for Spicer to be on the defensive. Does this dude not know the meaning of diplomacy?! Oh… He’s a straight talker who doesn’t sugar coat the truth. My bad.
Asked about Putin possibly skipping a meeting with Tillerson, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said, “There is a bit of irony that for all of these talks that have been perpetuated about back channels and direct links, that now it’s they won’t meet with you.”
One wonders if the investigation into their ties with Russia are the reason for this sudden tough stance. After all, Tillerson has his special Friend of Russia award!
Another Disastrous Military Op
(CNN)The US-led coalition has killed 18 of its own allies in Syria in what it described as a misdirected airstrike.
The strike was carried out on Tuesday and killed members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Washington and other nations have backed and coordinated with to fight ISIS militants in the country
Does anyone know what North Korea wants? No. Is there anything to gain by antagonising North Korea? No. That hasn’t stopped Donald Trump.
(CNN) An attempted missile launch by North Korea on Sunday failed, US and South Korean defense officials told CNN.
The attempted launch occurred a day after the regime of Kim Jong Un showed off a bevy of new missiles and launchers at a large-scale military parade on its most important holiday.
This comes after…
North Korea’s vice foreign minister blamed President Donald Trump for escalating tensions through his tweets and expansion of military exercises, saying the US was becoming “more vicious and more aggressive” under his leadership than it had been under President Barack Obama.
“We will go to war if they choose,” Han Song Ryol told the Associated Press.
“Whatever comes from US politicians, if their words are designed to overthrow the DPRK system and government, we will categorically reject them,” he said
Update: Apparently the US and China are now working together to handle the situation.
… because a huge ass bomb is the answer to all problems.
The US has dropped the “mother of all bombs” – the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the US military – on an area of eastern Afghanistan known to be populated by Isis-affiliated militants.
The Pentagon said the strike was the first time the 21,000lb weapon had been used in combat operations.
A spokesperson for the US Department of Defence confirmed to The Independent that a MC-130 aircraft dropped a GBU-43 bomb at 7pm local time.
The MOAB was actually developed using the parts of existing bombs by the US Air Force back in 2002 and “what it does is basically suck out all of the oxygen and lights the air on fire,” said Bill Roggio of the Foundation for Defence of Democracies think tank, to the Air Force Times.
So, Trump’s idea is literally to just drop bombs and wish on a star that everything works out okay?
At least 18 civilians have been killed in US-led air strikes in Afghanistan’s restive Helmand province, a UN inquiry has found.
A statement said that strikes targeting the Taliban last Thursday and Friday near Sanjin had been conducted by “international military forces,” but only US aircraft have been involved in recent coalition strikes, according to military officials.
…he might want to make sure that the adequate planning is carried out first instead of taking innocent lives.
Of course, if we go back and see what Trump had to say about Afghanistan before, once again, he’s proven himself to be a huge hypocrite.
In less depressing news, Ben Carson got stuck in an elevator this week. I know that one shouldn’t laugh at these things, but, hey, it’s been a dark dark period. I’ll take the laughs wherever I can.
In more depressing news, Trump wants to be treated like royalty when he comes to the UK.
US President Donald Trump is keen to use the Queen’s royal carriage to travel down The Mall to Buckingham Palace.
According to officials, the White House views the carriage procession as an important part of Trump’s itinerary for his visit scheduled for the second week in October.
Oh, fuck off. So, the UK taxpayers will have to pay for this shit jsuy because the government want to kiss his ass. They ought to mail his demands back with a stern NO and an offer to let him drive down in a smelly double decker bus. Wait, I forget, buses impair his judgement. Ugh.
Trump Made Me Spontaneously Racist!
Attorneys for a Ohio man who is accused of attacking a black woman at a Donald Trump campaign rally last March claimed their client was acting at the behest of the then-candidate.
According to the Guardian, Alvin Bamberger, a 75-year-old Ohio resident and a member of a veterans association, is charged, along with two other Trump boosters, with harassment over the attack on Shiya Nwanguma, .
75? My goodness. I’d say that we should get Danny Glover* to tell him that he’s too old for this shit but…Well…
According to University of Louisville student Nwanguma, as she was assaulted she was also being verbally abused, explaining, “I was called a n****r and a c*nt and got kicked out. They were pushing and shoving at me, cursing at me, yelling at me, called me every name in the book. They’re disgusting and dangerous.”
“Bamberger had no prior intention to act has he did,” the attorneys wrote in their filing. “Bamberger would not have acted as he did without Trump and/or Trump campaign’s specific urging and inspiration. To the extent that Bamberger acted, he did so in response to – and inspired by – Trump and/or Trump campaign’s urging to remove the protesters
…are these lawyers for real? That old saying about jumping off a cliff suddenly comes to mind.
Attorneys for the president dispute the assertion, saying the president “is immune from suit because he is president of the United States.”
(*Danny Glover is awesome).
Anyway, I’ll leave you with this interesting article about what a Russian expert has to say about Putin and Trump. Apparently Putin has something on him and he’ll turn on Trump eventually.
I can’t say that I’m not looking forward to that but first of all, I need Russia, the US, North Korea and anyone else tangled up in this mess to get their shit together and stop with the chest puffing and posturing.
Actually I have one more thing to comment on. United Airlines were in some shit this week after the shameful way they handled the situation with the ‘overbooked’ (it wasn’t even overbooked!) plane. It was a really disturbing video and hopefully the good doctor sues the crap out of them. For whatever reason people tried to defend it…some were even going as far to claim that whoever filmed it has committed a federal crime.
…If your first reaction is to defend shitty behaviour, you need to take a long look at yourself. Looooooong.
Anyway, peace out people. Happy Easter!
